Eligibility and Setup

To be eligible to join Intelligent Octopus Flux, you need to have solar and a GivEnergy battery installed. No other brands of batteries are eligible. If you’re already an Octopus customer, making the switch to Intelligent Octopus Flux is easy. Sign in to the Octopus Energy app, select Intelligent Octopus Flux as your new tariff, and connect your battery. Octopus will then seamlessly update both your import and export tariffs. Not on an Octopus export tariff yet? No worries, sign up for Outgoing Octopus or Octopus Flux first. Once you’re set up, switching to Intelligent Octopus Flux is just a tap away inside the app.

Understanding Intelligent Octopus Flux

Intelligent Octopus Flux has two unit rates. This means it will cost approximately 34p per kWh during peak hours between 4-7 pm and around 25p per kWh the rest of the day.

With this tariff, Octopus manages your battery storage for you. If your battery isn’t full from solar energy, Octopus will charge your GivEnergy battery during the low-cost period to power your home efficiently during the more expensive hours. If you’re away on holiday, they can also discharge your battery during the peak rate so you can profit even more.

If the GivEnergy battery storage is full, and your solar is producing more electricity than your home needs, any excess electricity will automatically be exported to the grid and you will be paid the same amount for the excess as it would cost you to buy. This means it doesn’t matter whether you use or export the electricity. All that matters is your battery is sufficiently charged between 4 pm-7 pm and Octopus will take care of that for you.
